Tugubele Senoufo Statuette, Ivory Coast
900€
Very finely executed female figure, in a standing position, arms folded forward, delicate face with rounded foreheads, eyes with lowered lids. It represents the spirits of the bush called "tugubele". The name tugubele applies to both spirits and mediating statuettes. They were used by Senufo diviners, called Sando'o, to communicate with spirits living in nature. The artists creating the tugubele closely followed the instructions given to them by the diviner who was allegedly told certain details about appearance, gender, posture, scarification marks etc. of the face directly through the mind. Soothsayers were often contacted by spirits while they slept in the form of a dream
Magnificent black patina, very worn in some places, testifying to long ritual use.
