Tschokwe statuette, Democratic Republic of Congo

Charming statuette representing a female figure camped on bent legs, arms folded over the chest. The face is inscribed in an oval sculpted with a triangular nose, an almond-shaped gaze with a median slit and a small, half-open mouth that comes forward. Band scarification adorns the abdomen above a protruding umbilicus. The pretty ears are made up of concentric semicircles just like the braids that run through the head from forehead to nape. A beautiful necklace of ancient bone beads surrounds the neck and strings of colored glass beads adorn the elbows and waist, also surrounded by a raffia loincloth.
