Chewa mask, Malawi / Zambia

1 500

Very old and rare Chewa mask with fine lines, covered with a pink paint enhanced with red symbols and which suggests the old colors underneath, which means that it has been used several times. Around the face there are the remains of the tissues that made up the headdress of this beautiful, very expressive mask. Inside, magnificent patina of use.
Chewa masks are only worn by male members of society. The mask wearer is considered to embody the spirit of a dead ancestor and therefore enjoys immunity from any act while masked. They are danced at most major life events, including the initiation of adults, the raising of a new leader, and funerals.
