Chewa Mask, Malawi
600€
Old Chewa mask with soft expression, eyes drooping downwards, open mouth in relief, all underlined with symbols drawn in red paint and kaolin on the forehead and nose. Other peculiarities: the ears sculpted on the face asymmetrically, prominent cheekbones on both sides of the mouth and a prominent chin that stands out from the face. All around the nails that were used to hold the headdress. Inside, magnificent patina of use.
Chewa masks are only worn by male members of society. The mask wearer is considered to embody the spirit of a dead ancestor and therefore enjoys immunity from any act while masked. They are used to dance during most major life events, including the initiation of adults, the raising of a new leader, and funerals.
