Ewe Fetish, Togo

Powerful protective fetish representing a character kneeling, a magical belly load, entirely covered with a fabric coated with various materials and chained, a multitude of old colored padlocks placed on the chest. Padlocks are used to "lock up" the forces of evil. Between the padlocks there are also "little papers" on which were probably written wishes. The face is well sculpted, the hollow sockets focusing attention on the large half-closed eyes placed under raised eyebrows, and the mouth is ajar on a cylindrical cavity to accommodate a cigarette. A traditional headdress dresses the head adorned with a pastillage of pigments and the face is covered with laundry blue giving this object a beautiful shine. Beautiful patina of libations.
