Yanda Statuette, Zande, Democratic Republic of Congo

400

Yanda protective statuette ("spirit", "strength") of the Mani cult whose role is to preserve the well-being of the community. These statuettes had a therapeutic and protective function, and were sometimes used to formulate divinatory omens. This one has the particularity of being Janus, the two faces in a semi-circle with stylized features and the body with volumes summarized for the essentials. Note the very marked umbilical zone. Copper rings adorn the neck, waist and ankles of the statuette. The deep and shiny dark patina testifies to the ritual use and the many tributes received by this work as a token of gratitude.
